James’ impressive resume covers the globe. Settled in Sun City Center’s retirement community, James is far from retired. He has some amazing stories, and grand plans to be a part of many more. James is one-of-a-kind!
James Johnson has specialized in professional photography since graduating from Photography School in 1970. His career has spanned the gamut of photographic specialties and has taken him to destinations all around the world. He has focused on commercial, industrial, and portrait photography, although his participation as a photography guide and educator during his tenure in Yosemite National Park, as Director of photographic services has been perhaps his most impressive and inspiring. Some of James’ many credits include: Author of the Yosemite Photographer’s Guide Development team, and Onboard Manager for Disney Cruise Lines.
Moving to Sun City Center, he became Director of Photo Education at JPI in Bradenton. He then started his own Travel Adventure Company, “Photo Experience”. Which became a Division of James Commercial Photography Studio & School in Sarasota. James also served on the faculty of Eckerd College, Anna Maria Island Art League and Ringling College.
When did you first become interested in photography?
I Became interested in photography at about age 7. I began shooting and developing my own images at age 10 and paid for my materials shining Shoes at the local mall, at a ranch club where there were plenty of cowboy customers who wanted their boots shined. I think I only charged a dime, but I got some surprisingly good tips of 50 cents, or even a dollar.
What do you enjoy most about your career?
I have always enjoyed the challenges photography presents, be it the perfect portrait, or telling a story with the finished image; be it for publication, or the capture of a precious family moment. I also enjoying sharing my photographic experiences while teaching students 18-90. I still hold destination photography workshops in Sun City Center.
Explain how your involved with the Sun City Center Community.
I have provided my photographic services to the community since I moved here in 2000. As a member of the SCC Chamber of Commerce for over 10 years. I also provided the photography for their yearly business directory and website. I’ve participated in the Rotary Club and the local BNI for many years. I have been a member of the SCC Photo Club for 20 years, teach classes and served two terms as club president. Provided photography for the SCC CA & their website, as well as several other businesses in the community. I have photographed several weddings, family portraits and business portraits for our residents as well.
